Create Your Very Own Bird Box at Home!

Looking for an engaging weekend activity? This simple DIY project is for you!

With just a couple of tools and one board, your family can work together to create a DIY bird box. Building your own bird house is a great activity to do with your family. Older children can help with measuring and cutting with a saw. Younger children can practice using a hammer. It is also a great STEM activity. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. A DIY building project includes both engineering and math while being engaging and fun!

Step 1: Gather your supplies

Collect Materials:

  • 1 board 3/4" x 3.5" x 40"
  • 13 nails

Collect Tools:

  • 1 hammer
  • 1 1-inch drill bit
  • Drill
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Square
  • Pencil
  • Saw
  • Two clamps

Step 2: 

  • Measure and cut six pieces from your board. These will be your front, back, top, bottom, and sides.

Step 3: 

  • Measure and drill the hole for your bird to enter.

Step 4: 

  • Nail the pieces together.

Congratulations, you have completed your birdhouse!
