Phebe Anna Thorne School: Kindergarten on a College Campus

Phebe Anna Thorne Kindergarten: Developmentally Appropriate, Child-Centered, Small Nurturing Setting

By Phebe Anna Thorne School November 19, 2024

The Phebe Anna Thorne Kindergarten program at Haverford provides a developmentally appropriate, child-centered program in a small and nurturing setting. It is especially appropriate for parents who wish their children to have a full-day kindergarten experience (8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) that combines a traditional kindergarten curriculum with many opportunities for active play and social interaction.

The perks of being on a college campus are quite abundant at the Phebe Anna Thorne School! From hands-on learning experiences, unique experiences, and access to a variety of places to explore, the Phebe Anna Thorne Kindergarten program provides kindergarteners with classroom and experiential learning to prepare them for their next steps.

Here are some of the fabulous experiences your kindergartener will enjoy by going to school on a college campus:

Haverford College Arboretum Nature Walks are a great way to collaborate with the college arborist to explore changes of nature on campus, visit the pond, and plant a tree in the apple orchard for Earth Day.

Story Time at Lutnick Library involves monthly story time and craft sessions with a college research and instructional librarian.

Chemistry Class is a big hit with Thorne kindergarteners! They get to test experiments with a chemistry professor - complete with lab coats and goggles - in a real Chem Lab!

Strawbridge Observatory Field Trip is a must do as well! Thorne Kindergarteners get to tour the observatory led by Haverford undergrads, and a physics and astronomy professor, while learning about stars and phases of the moon.

Art Gallery visits to Cantor Fitzgerald Art Gallery are well-loved by Thorne Kindergarteners. In 2023, John Muse, Assistant Professor and Director of Visual Studies/Director of VCAM did a private talk for our class about his Extra Medium exhibit, and a follow-up in-house workshop on shapes. in 2022, students saw Surfacing, an exhibit of richly painted and encrusted large canvases by Hee Sook Kim (HC Professor of Fine Arts). in 2024, students enjoyed Ojuelegba, a multisensory installation from renowned Nigerian artist Emeka Ogboh.

General exploration from Cricket field, the apple orchard and nature trails to a little playground with a sandbox and even a track.
